Orthodontic Nursing

"Studying orthodontic nursing with orthodontic team training has been a pleasant journey. The tutors are very supportive and thorough, which made my distant learning experience worthwhile. I have enjoyed this course and can not wait to progress onto orthodontic therapy in the near future! Thank you Eleanor, Jen and Joe for all your help."

The two orthodontic nursing programmes we offer have been designed to prepare learners to undertake the DTQ Award in Orthodontic Nursing and the DTQ Certificate in Orthodontic Nursing qualifications.

Learners wishing to attain the Certificate in Orthodontic Nursing must either first attain the Award in Orthodontic Nursing or provide
appropriate recognised prior learning.

Learners undertaking the programme(s) must attend a 2-hour induction at the centre, after which all learning will be carried out on our
e-learning platform, PebblePad.

Study is part guided and part self-directed.

Learners have a maximum of 16-weeks to complete the Award programme and 22-weeks to complete the Certificate programme.
The DTQ assessments are all e-assessments with no examinations.

Learners are required to maintain an activity log, and development plan and record, both of which are available within the e-learning
environment.

Who are the programmes aimed towards?

The Award in Orthodontic Nursing is aimed at two groups of learners:

  • a) Registered Dental Care Professionals who would like to learn more about orthodontics regardless of their current role, and
  • b) Orthodontic Nurses who would like to evidence their knowledge, skills and understanding

Group b may also wish to go on to study and attain the Certificate in Orthodontic Nursing.

The Certificate in Orthodontic Nursing (including the Award in Orthodontic Nursing) is also aimed at two groups of learners:

  • a) Orthodontic Nurses who would like to evidence their knowledge, skills and understanding
  • b) Orthodontic Nurses who would like to go on to train as an Orthodontic Therapist

The entire programme, Award and Certificate combined, has been designed to prepare Orthodontic Nurses for Orthodontic Therapy
training.

Award in Orthodontic Nursing

What is the area of study?
There are four mandatory units to achieve the Award, however each unit can be studied independently to develop knowledge,
understanding and skills. The units are:

AON101 Orthodontic Consent
AON102 Orthodontic Records
AON103 Orthodontic Anatomy and Physiology, and the Biology of Tooth Movement
AON104 Oral Health Information for the Orthodontic Patient

How is the programme delivered?
All four units are delivered online using our e-learning environment. Students are guided and supported by a Tutor and a Mentor.

How is the qualification assessed?
The students knowledge, understanding and skills are assessed by the completion of a number of tasks which are designed to
determine the competence of the candidate. The tasks are called e-assignments, and there are one or more for each unit of study.
Candidates have three attempts at each e-assignment. The e-assignments are completed and submitted using the e-learning platform.
There is no examination.

How long will the programme take?
Students are given up to 16-weeks to complete the study and then a further two weeks to complete and submit their e-assignments.
This equates to just 5-hours of study per week. Students who are committed may complete the study in as little as 8 weeks.
We are committed to student success and we have found that students who take longer than 16-weeks to complete the programme areless likely to be successful.

How much does the programme cost?
The total cost for the Award in Orthodontic Nursing is £420 which is broken down as follows:
Unit cost - £75 each
E-learning registration - £20 (annual)
E-assignment - £25 per unit
Fees are payable at the point of registration and are non-refundable.

There is a £25 fee for each e-assignment resit.
