Certificate in Dental Administration

This programme is suitable for all members of the dental team, especially those non-registrants who are working in non-clinical areas of dentistry, who wish to further develop their knowledge, understanding and administration skills. It is also suitable for registrants working clinically.

Students undertaking the programme must complete a short online induction after which all learning will be carried out on our virtual e-learning platform.

Study is part guided and part self-directed and students have a maximum of 26-weeks to complete the Certificate programme.

This qualification is awarded by Dental Team Qualifications (DTQ). The DTQ assessments are all e-based assessments carried out in a controlled environment.

Students are required to maintain an activity log, and development plan, both of which are available within OTT’s e-learning environment.

Who is the programme aimed towards?

The Certificate in Dental Administration is aimed at all members of the dental team who would like to learn more about dental administration, and wish to develop their knowledge, understanding and skills in non-clinical processes which will in turn enhance approach to patient care and involvement within the patient journey.

What are the areas of study?

The following units of study make up the Certificate; These are based upon the 9 GDC Principles:


Unit 1: Put patients’ interest first
  • Listen, Dignity and Respect, Honest, Holistic approach, Hygienic and Safe environment, Fairness, Patient interest priority, Insurance and indemnity, Laws and Regulations
  • Identification of challenges that can occur if patients’ interests do not come first
Unit 2: Communicate effectively with patients
  • How to provide information in an appropriate format
  • Gathering information, listening skills
Unit 3: Obtain valid consent
  • Understanding what is meant by the term ‘valid consent’
  • The process of obtaining valid informed consent
  • Providing required paperwork (treatment and non-treatment) and cost information
Unit 4: Maintain and protect patients’ information and confidentiality
  • Record keeping and documentation
  • Data Protection
  • Safeguarding
  • Caldicott Principles
  • Access to records
Unit 5: Have a clear and effective complaints procedure
  • Process protocols

How is the programme delivered?

All units are delivered online using our e-learning environment. Students are guided and supported by a Tutor/Mentor. Optional face-to-face sessions at one of our centres, or in-house, are available on request. Please contact us for further information.

 

How is the qualification assessed?

The student’s knowledge, understanding and skills are assessed by the completion of a number of assessments on their virtual e-portfolio. These e-assessments take a variety of styles, which ensure that all units of study are assessed fairly and proportionately.

Students have three attempts at each e-assessment. The e-assessments are carried out in a controlled environment and submitted using the e-learning platform.

How long will the programme take?

Students are given up to 24-weeks to complete the study and then a further 2 weeks to complete and submit their e-assessments.

This equates to approximately 6-7 hours of study per week.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course students will be able to:

  • Describe their abilities to put patients’ interest first
  • Identify challenges that can occur if patients’ interest do not come first
  • Describe Law, ethics and professionalism
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills with patients and colleagues, including (but not exclusively) informed consent, patient management techniques, checking medical history
  • Discuss the process of obtaining valid informed consent
  • Discuss the importance of maintaining patient confidentiality and appropriate handling of patient information with reference to Data Protection
  • Discuss the implementation, effectiveness and use of a clear complaints procedure
  • Discuss how to work with colleagues in a way that is in the patients’ best interests
  • Describe how a dental administrator should maintain, develop and work within their professional knowledge and skills
  • Reflect on personal behaviour that may have an effect on patients’ confidence in you and the dental profession
  • Discuss the process for raising concerns if patients’ or colleagues are at risk
  • Discuss the impact that personal behaviour can have on patients’ confidence in you and the dental profession
